The Doc Holliday Tartan — Highland Heritage Meets American Frontier

This year the World Whiskey Society is proud to release the Doc Holliday tartan, designed by Alan Moore.

John Henry Holliday was a Southern gentleman first: born in Griffin, Georgia in 1851, raised in Valdosta, schooled in Latin and rhetoric, a dentist at twenty. What drove him west was a death sentence — consumption, the disease that had taken his mother. Told the dry air might buy him time, he went: Dallas, Dodge City, Las Vegas, Prescott, and finally Tombstone, under the granite of the Dragoon Mountains.

The name he carried west was Scottish. Holliday is a variant of Halliday, an old Border surname rooted in Annandale; his mother’s name, McKey, is Scots-Gaelic in origin. The Highland and Border families who settled Georgia brought their names, their Presbyterian faith and their stubborn sense of honor with them. By Doc’s generation those traits were called Southern. They had started out as something else.

The tartan draws its color from that journey’s end: deep reds and burnt oranges from the Arizona landscape and the Dragoon Mountains, vibrant purples from the desert flowers. For Holliday himself, a deep “Tombstone” grey and a chalky “bone” white — a nod to a man who lived every day in full view of his own mortality.

Together these colors produce a pattern that is unmistakably Southwestern, but treated with traditional Scottish design. A reminder that Scottish culture has travelled the world — from the glens of the Highlands, through the red clay of Georgia, to the dust and rock of Arizona — and that a great story, like great whiskey, only gets better with time.

The Doc Holliday Tartan is officially registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans and will be available as part of the upcoming clothing and accessories collection.
